Each year the AWS (American Welding Society) sit down as section officers before the District Conference and nominate people within their section for awards. Any individual who promotes the welding industry can be picked. Shaun Black of Nebo School District was nominated as the Utah Section Educator of the Year for the American Welding Society. After the committee reviewed his list of accomplishments as a welding educator and CTE advocate the vote was unanimous! Shaun was awarded a National Recognition Plaque from the AWS and was esteemed as the Educator of the Year for the 2019 school year. The awards are only given at the end of each term and due to the pandemic, the AWS representative Gordon Reynolds awarded Shaun the plaque in his faculty meeting on February 17, 2021.

Some of Shaun’s accomplishments include: pushing the Nebo School District Welding Programs to the AWS Sense status among all five schools/instructors, starting a “Trikefest” which is now called the Utah Valley CTE Expo that invites all CTE subjects and promotes competition state-wide for students, organizing a welding competition that prepares the students for SkillsUSA at the district/regional level, been on the M-Tech articulation committee, and has shaped the future for many students who have entered the welding industry. Nebo School District is lucky to have an employee that is as dedicated to the students as Mr. Black has been and is well-deserving of this prestigious award.
