NEBO Invitational

In January we held our 10th annual Nebo Invitational with six teams within the region competing. This year the event was held at two different locations, the Welding Competition was held at Payson High School, while the Fabrication Contest was held at Salem Hills High School. All teams were well represented and the competition continually gets tougher. This event was started as a pre-Skills USA event to help better prepare the students for the state competition and has served the schools well who have attended the state event over the years.

This year in the welding event the students had 5 different widgets to build. The students were responsible to have each widget ready for the competition, tacked and prepped, to try to mimic what Skills USA was recommending for the state competition this year. This made the process run more smoothly as the judges were able to look over the widgets as they came in every rotation instead of all at once at the end. When the last time was called and the judging was completed the top 5 results were:   1st Place Zach Wright (MMHS) 2nd Place McLayne Balzly (Payson High) 3rd Place Jordan Pilati (MMHS) 4th Place Jake Peterson (Provo High) 5th Place Jake Torgerson (Payson High). There were 18 total competitors and the overall trophy will travel back to Maple Mountain High School as they won the overall for the event. Congratulations Welders!

In the Fabrication Competition, there were 6 fab teams represented. They were given the prints the morning of the event but were required to round up the materials needed beforehand. The competition blueprint was generated by a former student and each team built the same roller stand at the event. Because this is a timed event all students had to collaborate and work together to finish the project within the 4-hour timeframe. Finishing is a priority when competing at state! Once the projects were finished and the final results were in, the top four teams were: 1st Place Springville High School, 2nd Place Provo High School, 3rd Place Maple Mountain High School, and 4th Place Payson High School. Congratulations Fabricators!

As a collaborative team, we would like to thank our major sponsor Black Ice Coatings of Spanish Fork and each of the judges, who not only judged our event but helped sponsor some of the prizes. For the Fabrication Contest Dillon Barber of Blackout Fabrication and Dillon Hales from Yeti Welding. For the Welding Competition Kyley Black from KOB Designs, Austin Augustus from Hall Fabrication, Jared Creer from Hamblin Welding, and J. Merrill Hallam our District CTE Specialist. As always we would like to thank our biggest sponsor Nebo School District CTE office for the support and lunch they provided everyone!
